School Introduction

The   College of Science of Hebei University of Technology is run by three   departments (Department of Applied Mathematics, Department of Information and   Computer Science, and Department of Applied Physics), three research   institutes (Institute of Applied Mathematics, Institute of Applied Physics,   and Institute of Biophysics), three basic courses teaching and research   offices (Higher Mathematics Teaching and Research Office, Engineering   Mathematics Teaching and Research Office, General Physics Teaching and   Research Office), one experiment center (Physics Experiment Center) and the   College Office.

Major Introduction

The   mathematics department at our school has established research strength in   several areas including operator theory and functions of several complex   variables, optimization theory and algorithms, control theory, artificial   intelligence, and numerical solutions of differential equations. In the past   five years, the department has published over 170 SCI papers and led over 30   projects for the National Natural Science Foundation of China, receiving a   total research grant of over 16 million yuan. The department has also been   awarded the Hebei Natural Science Award and the Tianjin Science and   Technology Progress Award. Notably, the department has several distinguished   members including those recognized under the National "Ten Thousand   Plan", Hebei Province Outstanding Youth Fund, and Hebei Province Distinguished   Youth Fund. The Hebei Operations Research Society and the Computational   Mathematical Branch of the Hebei Mathematical Society are also based at our   school, hosting academic conferences regularly.

The   Mathematics discipline of Hebei University of Technology started offering   master's degree programs in Applied Mathematics in 1984. In 1986, it was   authorized to offer master's degree programs in Applied Mathematics.   Currently, it offers a first-class master's program in Mathematics and a   professional master's program in Applied Statistics. The discipline has three   major departments: Applied Mathematics, Information and Computational   Science, and Applied Statistics. It also has a Mathematics Teaching Center   and the Institute of Mathematics. The Information and Computing Science major   is a national first-class major.

Educational System

The basic   study period for master’s students is 3 years, and the maximum study period   is 4 years.

Training Objectives

Academic   level of expertise

International   students are expected to have a thorough understanding of the fundamental   theoretical concepts of modern mathematics and be well-versed in the current   research status and future trends of the discipline's theory and application.   They should also possess the ability to apply the scientific theories and   technical methods of the field to engage in advanced scientific research or   technology-related work. Furthermore, they should be proficient in teaching,   scientific research, technology, and management in a variety of settings such   as colleges, universities, scientific research institutes, and enterprises.

Knowledge   and understanding of China

International   students are expected to have a good understanding of China's history,   geography, society, economy, and other basic knowledge related to China's   national conditions and culture. They should also be familiar with China's   political system and foreign policies. Furthermore, it's important for them   to comprehend the mainstream values and public morality of Chinese society,   and develop a sound concept of the rule of law and moral awareness.

Language   skills

International   students, studying in China, are expected to proficiently use a foreign   language to complete research tasks and comprehend Xi's Theory in their   respective discipline or major. They must possess the ability to communicate   effectively in a foreign language and apply it in their field of work.   Master's students must have a minimum proficiency level of 3 in the Chinese   language as per the Chinese Proficiency Standards for Teaching Other   Languages.

Cross-cultural and global competence

International   students studying in China should possess the necessary awareness, knowledge,   attitudes, and skills to be tolerant, aware of, and adaptable to cultural   diversity. They should also be capable of promoting mutual respect,   understanding, and solidarity among people from different nationalities,   societies, and countries. Furthermore, students pursuing a master's degree   should have a good understanding of the international perspective in their   field of study. They should possess the ability to apply and develop the   knowledge, skills, and methods of their discipline in the actual environment   of various countries. Additionally, they should be able to participate in   international affairs and competitions.

Curriculum Plan

The   programme is arranged according to the schooling orientation and objectives   of HEBUT. The master’s degree in Mathematics consists of basic, professional   and elective courses. The teaching management of international students   includes performance assessment, daily attendance, and comprehensive   assessment. The assessment standards are the same as those for Chinese   graduate students in HEBUT. International students should participate in   activities such as academic research, teaching practice, social practice, and   specialized technical training in accordance with the requirements of the   training plan, and abide by the regulations on thesis defense and practical   assessment.

Faculty Resources

The   Mathematics discipline has a strong teaching team consisting of over 70   teachers, including one national outstanding teacher, three outstanding   teachers from Hebei Province, one expert with special allowances from Hebei   Province, and 10 "Yuan Guang Scholars" of Hebei University of   Technology. The discipline has won two third prizes of the Hebei Provincial   Natural Science Award. Professor Sun Jie, an internationally renowned optimization   expert from the National University of Singapore and Curtin University in   Australia, is a part-time professor of the discipline. Dai Yuhong, a leading   talent of the National "Ten Thousand Talents Program", a winner of   the Chinese National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and a   researcher of Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, Chinese Academy of   Sciences, is a part-time master's supervisor of the discipline.

The team   members include the Executive Director of Operations Research Society of   China, the Director of Chinese Society for Computational Mathematics, the   Vice President of Hebei Mathematical Society, the President and   Secretary-General of Operations Research Society of Hebei Province, and the   President of Computational Mathematics Society of Hebei Province.
